Construction Manager / Construction Supervisor, Wilts & Berks Canal Trust

We are looking for someone to take prime responsibility for and manage all activity and results related to the construction site work, selecting and leading the construction team, and working with the Projects Director, Project Manager and other officers and directors to achieve the project aims.

Major tasks and activities:
• Review the design documents and construction information and accept them for construction;
• Plan and schedule the construction works in detail in accordance with the project programme drawn up by the Project Manager;
• Prepare the method statements for each task and have them reviewed by [….];
• Ensure that satisfactory welfare arrangements are available on site (toilets, washrooms, storage, first aid etc – see Welfare Regs.);
• Make preparations for dealing with emergencies and injuries;
• Select and brief the team, including health and safety briefings as required, identify and provide or arrange training where needed;
• Take all precautions to safeguard members of the public and others;
• Order materials and hire plant as required, using a budget delegated from the Project Manager;
• Work to the project construction budget and manage expenditure;
• Supervise work on site by specialist contractors;
• Ensure approval of temporary and permanent works by a competent person (e.g. the Project Engineer) in regular inspections;
• Monitor progress and report to the Projects Director and Project Manager;
• Take the Principal Contractor role under CDM;
• Check that workforce has everything it needs;
• Monitor external consultants, contractors and suppliers as necessary;
• Communicate with internal and external parties in accordance with the WBCT Communications Strategy;
• Report on progress against plans and flag up opportunities and threats;
• Maintain appropriate records of meetings, documents and drawings;

The canal will restore an important link in the national waterways network, but the project will also be part of anti-flooding schemes, green infrastructure for the region, creating connections between existing wildlife, aquatic and wetland habitats for endangered species.Working with our partners, over 25 organisations in total, we aim to restore the canal route, provide wildlife habitats, cycle ways, routes for walkers and wheelchair access, along the restored towpath. There will be many economic benefits resulting from the restoration. There will be jobs to rebuild the structures and enterprises that come from increased visitor numbers.

What are they looking for?

• Significant prior experience of managing construction projects preferably with volunteer workers;
• Ability to plan and schedule materials, plant and people to minimise waste of time and money;
• Able to interface orally effectively with the general public, local councillors etc who may have concerns about happenings on site;
• Ability to assess, analyse and prioritise complex tasks to achieve outputs within constraints;
• IT skills to effectively use email, word processing and spreadsheets.

• Must have own effective and reliable home computing facilities including broadband internet access, email, word processing, spreadsheet and printer;
