Volunteers from Nationwide’s Compliance and Risk Programme (FC&R Portfolio) got stuck in building a board walk around the side of the hill at Kings Farm Wood, Wroughton is Sept 2015. Supervised by the WWT, who are joint owners of the area linking Clouts Wood and Markham Banks nature reserves, the team cut turf, sawed and hammered nails into wood and made stakes to form the board walk; making a non slip access path for the local community and visitors to the site. One employee, whose normal day job is a Senior Analyst on the programme, said “it is just so nice to be outside of the office, in the fresh air for the day, doing physical work instead of tapping on a keyboard. It feels good doing something worthwhile for the community”. Another showed such enthusiasm in sawing an angled slice off a plank of wood, the team felt she had missed her true vocation as a carpenter, as she has recently joined the programme as a Project Support Officer.
